Dr Dylan Wiliam comments on why to use whiteboards…

The internationally recognised educational consultant, Dr Dylan Wiliam has acclaimed student whiteboards as the most important development in educational technology since the slate 200 years ago!

In a world of technological advancement Dr Wiliam advocates drywipe boards and template pockets as a valuable assessment tool in his book ‘Embedded Formative Assessment’.

‘Whiteboards are powerful tools in that the teacher can quickly frame a question and get an answer from the whole class’ says Dr Wiliam.  The teacher can then easily assess how well the concepts have been grasped.

A flexible alternative is the template pocket.  In this way the teacher can preprint different images on the inserts for specific lessons i.e. graph paper for Maths or a map for Geography.  The same assessment logic follows through as with the whiteboards.
